The Croatian national team officially announced that Rakitic, now 32, will retire from the national team.
The 32-year-old Rakitic made his national team debut in the game against Estonia on September 8, 2007. He played 106 games for the Croatian team and contributed 15 goals.
He has participated with the team in many international competitions such as the 2008 European Cup, the 2012 European Cup, the 2014 World Cup, the 2016 European Cup and the 2018 World Cup.
Rakitic helped the Croatian team reach the finals in the 2018 World Cup in Russia and eventually finished runner-up. Set the best result in the history of the Croatian team in the World Cup.
Rakitic said: "Farewell to the Croatian national team is the most difficult decision of my career, but I think this decision must be made. I like every game I fight for my motherland. The unforgettable moments of the World Cup will be my life. The best memories in the game. I believe we still have a great team and its future is bright. I wish my friends and national teammates good luck in the upcoming games. I will be their most loyal fan."
The Croatian national team's official account also humorously bid farewell to Rakitic: "If we have a decisive fifth penalty to be taken, we will call you."
